About

Abadan:Retold is an innovative multi-media platform for documenting the social history of Abadan. It is invented and managed by Rasmus Christian Elling, designed by Nikolaj Grønholdt and translated by Narges Ghandchi – and run with content kindly provided by scholars and Abadan enthusiasts around the world. The aim is to turn the platform into a collective, crowdsourced project based on the participation of everyone interested in Abadan and its history.

Rasmus Christian Elling is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, fluent in Persian and have lived in Iran. As a scholar of modern Iran and urban studies, he came across Abadan through his research in 2011, and have since explored the city’s history through oil company and state archives, newspapers, diplomatic reports, novels and biographies, as well as through fieldwork and interviews in Abadan. To understand his fascination with Abadan, please read his essays here.

In 2014, Elling received a grant from the Arthur Christensen Foundation for Iranian Studies in Denmark, and in March 2015, he raised an additional 3,000 USD from kind supporters across the world. The funds have been spent on designing this platform and on translating the entries written for the platform. We will try to raise more funding for the ongoing work with the website and we will appreciate any kind donations (more info to come).

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE SUPPORT,

Rasmus Christian Elling (PhD, Associate Professor),

University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
